Can you dive from a open bottom diving bell in really deep water safely?
I've always wanted to know, if you dive a mile down in the ocean, it would obviously kill you normally due to the pressures involved. But if you go down in a diving bell with an open bottom so you can dive in (ie like an upside down cup) would you be safe? How far from the bell could you swim away before you get killed by the pressure again? And how would it work?
Not a mile down. Can't be done. It's not the actual pressure directly on a human that kills ( believe it or not, the human body isn't all that compressible, just air spaces are which divers equalize anyway) it's the breathing mix that does. Deep divers ( saturation divers) use a breathing mix that will quickly incapacitate you on the surface but it's fine at depth to a limit. It actually has MUCH less oxygen in it. That's right. Less. Oxygen becomes toxic at depth. Breathing what you are now (21% O2 by volume) will get you killed below 250 feet. Saturation divers use what's called a hypoxic mix. It has less O2 by volume. The missing O2 is made up for by mixing in inert gasses such as helium, which has a decreased effect of narcosis than other gasses in comparison.
Most diving bell operations are conducted no deeper than 200 feet or so usually although there has been a record set at 700 meters.
You also need to remember that a dive bell is an open container. It's open on the deck and whatever the ambient water pressure is ( pressure outside the bell) has to equal the pressure inside the bell or the bell would flood as the gas inside it is compressed. Even though the divers may be dry and comfortable in the bell...they are still experiencing the exterior water pressure. Just leaving the bell doesn't change that. It's the same pressure being applied to the diver both inside and outside the bell.
