What to do if your having trouble seeing your fly? ?
Sometimes I have trouble seeing my flys (especially emergers), and I think I have pretty good eyesight (and I have polarized glasses). Is this just a common Fly Fishing thing? I use quite a bit of floatant and make sure its dry often, but I still lose it sometimes in the nervous water, or when the sun is shinning on the surface a certain way. Any tricks out there rather than listening to the slurp?
Get used to it. It's something we all suffer from. The smaller the fly and the older the eyes the worse it gets.
I find I can keep track by estimating the length of my leader and watching where the fly should be. At anything resembling a take at that point I set the hook.
Emergers float in and just under the surface film. In practical terms they may as well be nymphs, so far as visibility is concerned. With dries you might switch to parachute versions of the patterns you favor. Their upright wings seem to help.
Somebody suggested Strike Indicators. When usefull at all, they are better for helping you track nymphs and other subsurface flies. Their usefullness with dries is problematical at best.
