Anybody buy a boat and wish they hadn't?
I'm thinking of buying my first boat. I've heard all the money pit comments and that the second best day of owning a boat is the day you sell it, the first being the day you buy it. To me, the days in between, of actually being on the water catching fish, would melt any money issues. What do we work for? I'm in MA, will be fishing the saltwater exclusively so I'll need at least a 24 ft boat for the chop around here. Thinking of getting a cuddy for some overnight striper fishing. For about $10k probably looking at a 10 year old Sea Ray inboard. For some reason outboards seem like they'd be easier to maintain so that's an option also. I surf fish about 40 times a season, so using the boat will not be an issue. Any comments from fishermen who boat fish would be greatly appreciated.
I don't saltwater fish anymore due to location but when I did I kept up a 18' skiff with a 90HP Merc and trailered it to the water. The most important thing about buying older boats used in a saltwater environment is going to be corrosion and fractured joints i.e. motor mounts, transom buttress and so-forth.
As with any boat, you have got to take care of your equipment. If you're going to expect to spend ten grand on a good boat, go ahead and pay two hundred more to have a professional boat shop look the boat over and let them check it out because there are so many small details a normal Joe will overlook that could later cost some serious bucks to repair. In some cases you may even get the boat owner to pay half the bill then that way they can present their findings to the next prospective buyer.
I've had several different type boats in my lifetime and now that I'm older I have settled into two small Jon Boat type boats with under 15HP motors and still catch as many fish on a heap less expenses, but I still keep them up as if they were high dollar boats. There's a lot to be said about being out on the water and once you get ownership of your own boat, you'll see there are a lot of things you missed out on before you bought it. But beware, boats & motors will break and paying the bill sux which is why I maintain the theory of less is better.
