Why did my sucker fish die all of a sudden?
I have had a 75 gallon fish for 3 years. I recently have 5 telescope goldfish and two sucker fish. This morning both my sucker fish were fine but tonight when i got home one sucker fish was dead. He showed no signs of disease. Why did he die? And should i do something about the tank so the others don't die?
i wanted to add that i didnt purchase him i just got him from my sister who has had him forever
There are several likely reasons.
Lack of food. Although small plecos can live on algae and leftovers for a while, as they get bigger they need much more food than they can find in a normal tank. Sinking tablets and lumps of fresh veges are good food. Look at the fish's belly, it should be slightly rounded when they are well fed. If it's sunken in, then it's hungry.
Water quality. Although plecos are pretty hardy, ammonia or nitrate buildup can kill them. Goldfish are even tougher and usually survive in conditions that kill most fish.
Temperature - Plecos are tropical fish, although they can be kept with goldfish, the water must be kept warm. Cold water wont harm goldfish, but it will kill plecos.
If all those things are OK, then maybe it was just one of those random fish deaths, but hopefull it's given you some things to check.
